In scope of the European Airbus A380 project there was a special transportation system for the aircraft parts created. The individual parts of the aircraft are manufactured in different locations all over Europe and brought by heavy load transport to the final assembly facility "Aeroconstellation" in Toulouse.

These heavy load transporters are 8 m wide, 14 m high and 50 m long. The first part of the transport is done over sea or river to Bordeaux or Langon. Then the transport is continued over existing roads.

These roads were modified for this purpose: Streets were widened, crossings were changed, modifying of turns, creating city passages, building new dedicated roads, redirections and so on. Overall the route has a length of 293 km. 208 km of these are existing roads, 14.6 km redirections, 15 km dedicated roads and 1.5 km drive around bridges.

To supervise the transports from a central location a network structure was built up. This network connects the dynamic machinery and the equipment. It includes collecting stations for traffic and weather information, traffic control equipment, dynamic electronic traffic signs, video surveillance cameras and control PCs. In the central control room the administrator can monitor and control all equipment on the route. 

In order to guarantee the maximum safety for the data transfer the ring structure with its protection mechanism was chosen for the backbone connections. Because of the long distances between the Gigabit Ethernet Switches they are connected with single mode fiber.
